Customer Tagging in Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout

Bold Subscriptions lets you automatically assign customer tags when customers subscribe to products that belong to a specific subscription group.

You can use customer tags to:

  • Identify and segment subscription customers.

  • Trigger marketing automations or campaigns that rely on customer tags.

  • Offer VIP or member pricing using Bold Custom Pricing.

Note: To learn more about this integration and use-case, please visit VIP Member Pricing.

Customer tagging in Bold Subscriptions keeps tags synchronized with subscription activity, so you don’t need to manage them manually.

How customer tagging works

You can choose which customer tags are applied in your subscription groups. When customers subscribe to products belonging to those groups, those tags are automatically applied to their Shopify profile.

If you add tags to a subscription group that already has subscribers, by default, those tags are applied to their profile the next time their subscription order recurs. However, you can also choose to apply them to existing subscribers right away.

Customer tags are only removed from a customer's profile when their next scheduled order does not process and the tags grace period passes (more on this below). This can happen when a subscription is paused, cancelled, skipped, or a transaction fails.

Tags grace period

You can configure a tags grace period to determine how long customer tags should remain on a customer’s profile when their next scheduled order doesn’t process.

Tags will remain in place during the grace period and are automatically removed if the grace period passes without a successful order.

To ensure tags remain in place while a payment method is being updated, we recommend matching your tags grace period to your dunning retry period.

Tag behavior over time

  • When a customer places their initial subscription order, the configured tags are added to the customer’s Shopify profile.

  • On each successful repeat subscription order, the tags are applied based on the current tagging configuration of the group.

  • Tags remain in place as long as scheduled orders continue to process successfully.

  • If a scheduled order does not process, the tags remain during the tags grace period.

  • If a customer’s next scheduled order does not process successfully and the tags grace period passes, the tags are automatically removed from the customer’s profile.

A background process checks for expired tags every six hours and removes them when necessary.

Subscription status customer tags

Bold Subscriptions also automatically applies the following customer tags based on a customer’s subscription status:

  • active_subscriber

  • inactive_subscriber

These tags cannot be assigned manually and are not affected by the tags grace period.

Important considerations

  • You can assign up to five customer tags per subscription group.

  • Tags are applied based on the subscription group configuration at the time a subscription is purchased and an order recurs.

  • Only one Bold Custom Pricing tag can be used per subscription group.

  • Custom Pricing customer tags must first be created in Bold Custom Pricing before they can be selected in Bold Subscriptions.

  • Tags are automatically removed from a customer’s profile if their next scheduled order does not process successfully and the tags grace period passes.
