Build a Box Subscription Feature Setup


The "Build a Box Subscription" feature allows customers to pick and choose what they want to receive every order. This feature allows you to set how many products make up the box and what the set price is for the box.

Note: This feature is only available on the Advanced plan tier.

If you have all the information you need and you're ready to set it up right now, please follow these steps:

  1. From Shopify's admin, select Apps.

  3. Select Subscriptions, then Cart Mode.

  4. Select Single Product or Multiple Products cart mode.

    Note: "Build a Box Subscription" feature is not compatible with "Recurring Cart" mode. With "Multiple Products" mode, a customer can only subscribe to one "Build a Box" per checkout. They will be brought from the product page to the selection page before reaching the subscriptions checkout. They can only check out with the single "Build a Box" product.

  5. Select Subscriptions, then My Subscriptions.

  6. Select Create Subscription Group.

  7. Enter an Internal Subscription Name.

  8. Under "Subscription Type", select Subscription Box.

  9. Under "Step 2: Select Intervals", select:
    1. The Let customer select order interval radio button.
      1. Select the intervals you would like to offer.

        Note:  You must choose at least one interval: day, week, month and/or year.

      2. Enter a Maximum Interval Length.

        Note:  This is the maximum interval a customer can select and will show as a dropdown before the time length (ex. Ship every 2 months).

    2. The Set a fixed order interval radio button.
      1. Under orders will be processed every, enter a number.
      2. Select Day(s), Week(s), Month(s) or Year(s).

        Note: If you select monthly or weekly, you can choose a specific day to charge customers, or you can charge them on the anniversary of their purchase date.

  10. Select Subscription only.

    Note: This is the only selectable option in this case.Step 2: Select Intervals

  11. Select "Maximum Subscription Length":
    • No limit - the subscription will continue until it is canceled.
    • Set max number of recurring orders to - lets you specify how long the subscription will last. Selecting, this allows you to add an ongoing option and to enable customers to prepay for subscriptions if selected.

  12. Under "Minimal Fulfilled Order Requirement", select:
    • Off; or
    • Customer can cancel after at least XX orders.
      • Enter a number.

  13. In "Step 3: Build a Box Settings", under "Lock time" enter a number of Days.

    Note: Lock time is the number of days and hours before the customer's next order date when their selections will be locked down, and they can no longer edit their order.

  14. After Hours, enter a number.

  15. After "Lock after making new choices", choose Yes or No.

    Note: Selecting yes here would limit customers to one change between order dates.

  16. After "Lock edits to orders more than", enter a number of days away.

    Note: Selecting a number here prevents customers from making changes to an order too far in advance.

  17. Select Continue.


  18. Under "Product Labels", select Add Product Label.

  20. Select Save.

  21. Repeat steps 17 - 19 until there is a label for each option available in the box.

  22. Under "Box Sizes", select Shopify admin (opens in a new tab).

  23. Create Products or Variants for each box size offered.

    Note: If you have already completed this step, you can proceed to step 25.

  24. Under "Box Sizes", select Add Box Size.

  25. Select Select Product.

  26. Select ADD next to the first box size product you created in step 25.

  27. Select Continue with selected products.

  28. Enter a number next to "Limit the number of products in the box".

    Note: This is the number of products that are required for this box size.

  29. Select Save.

  30. Repeat steps 23 - 28 for each box size.

  31. Under "Scheduled Assignments", select Create Assignment.

  32. Select a Start Date.

    Note: This is the date that your assignment will begin and become available to subscribers.

  33. Under "Slot 1", select Select Product.

  34. Select ADD next to the product or variant to add.


  35. Select Continue with selected products.

  36. Repeat steps 34 - 36 for each product label.

  38. Select I'm Done.

  • This feature is subscription only.
  • This function is meant for no more than 50 Product Labels per box size and is better suited for less than 50.
  • This feature cannot support a variant picker and requires variants to be separated as different options in the box.
  • This feature is not compatible with prepaid subscription options.
  • This feature is not compatible with the "Product Swap" feature.
  • This feature is not compatible with our "Add to Existing Subscription" feature.
  • The customer is not able to increase their product quantity. They must subscribe to a second "Build a Box" (requiring a second checkout process).
  • If a customer wants to swap to another "Build a Box" or another size, they must currently cancel and resubscribe.
  • There is no way to import existing subscribers; they will be required to resubscribe.
