Gift Cards in Bold Checkout

Bold Checkout offers Bold Gift Cards, a suite of features that gives you the ability to sell gift cards as products, and issue gift cards by email. With the included management tools, you can customize the gift card email, and view purchasers and recipients, statuses, balances, and more.

Alert: Only gift cards created in Bold Checkout can be used in Bold Checkout.

This guide walks you through the features and setup of Bold Gift Cards in Bold Checkout.

 


 

Connect Bold Gift Cards

To access the features of Bold Gift Cards from within Bold Checkout, please follow the steps below.

  1. From within Bold Checkout, navigate to Payment options > Gift Cards.
  2. Click the Connect button next to Bold Gift Cards.

Customize the gift card email

When a gift card is purchased from your store, or when you issue a gift card by email, the gift card code and secret PIN is sent to your customer via email. You can customize this email with your own language, and use the provided merge fields to automatically populate information specific to your customer.

Note: It’s best to ensure this email is set up correctly and enabled before creating or issuing your gift cards.

To customize the gift card email, please follow the steps below.

  1. From within Bold Checkout, navigate to Payment Options > Gift Cards.
  2. Scroll down and click the Customize email button.

  3. Change the Subject Line and body of the email as needed.

    Note: Merge fields are outlined in the left margin and can be included in your email if desired. For example, using the [note] merge field will include the private note you defined when creating a gift card by email.

Create a gift card product

Bold Gift Cards allows you to create and sell gift cards on your storefront. When a customer purchases a gift card, an email with a unique code and PIN number is sent to them using the email address they entered in the checkout. Customers can use the gift card themselves, or forward the email to their desired recipient.

To create a gift card product, you must create the product within your store admin first. You'll select this product in Bold Checkout to represent your gift card. Please follow the steps below.

Step 1: Create a product in your store admin to represent the gift card

Create a product in your platform admin to represent your gift card. Please note the following:

  • The cost of the product will become the value of the gift card.
  • The product must have a SKU.
  • It’s best to create the product as a digital product so your customers won’t have to enter a shipping address.

Step 2: Select the gift card product in Bold Checkout

  1. From within Bold Checkout, navigate to Payment Options > Gift Cards.
  2. In the Add your gift card products field, search for your gift card product by SKU.
  3. Click Add.

Issue a gift card by email

This method allows you to create and send an email with a unique gift card code and PIN to an individual customer. This gift card does not appear on the storefront.

  1. From within Bold Checkout, navigate to Payment Options > Gift Cards.
  2. In the top right, click Send gift card.
  3. Enter an Amount and the Recipient Email address.

  4. Optional: Enter a personalized message to your recipient.
  5. Optional: Enter a private note. Note: Private notes can be shared with your customer if you include the [note] merge field in your gift card email template. For more information, view the information above, under Customize the Gift Card Email.
  6. Optional: Select an Expiration date. Note: Countries have different laws for gift card expiry dates. Check the laws in your country before setting an expiry date.
  7. Click Send.

 


 

Gift card management

To view and manage your gift cards, navigate to Payment options > Gift Cards, and click the Issued tab.

This page displays the following information:

  • Purchased by - The email address of the customer who purchased the gift card, along with the last four characters of the gift card code. (Your store email address is shown for gift cards that are issued by email.)
  • Recipient - The email address of the recipient of the gift card.
  • Status - The current status of gift card, defined as follows:
    • New - The gift card has never been used.
    • Used - Some of the balance has been used for payment.
    • Empty - All of the balance has been used for payment.
    • Expired - The gift card had an expiry date which has passed.
    • Canceled - The gift card has been canceled by a store admin through the Actions menu.
  • Creation date - The date the gift card was created.
  • Amount - The initial amount the gift card contained.
  • Balance - The remaining balance on the gift card.

 

View gift card details

You can view all the gift card details, such as the full code and the PIN number for each of your customers. 

To view a customer's gift card details, click the Issued tab, and search for your customer by email. Click on the ellipsis under the Actions column, and select View details.

Cancel a gift card

In the event your customer has lost their gift card code, you can cancel their gift card and issue a new one with their remaining balance.

To cancel a gift card, click the Issued tab, and search for your customer by email. Click on the ellipsis under the Actions column, and select Cancel gift card.

Export gift card data

The Export data button will allow you to export your issued gift card information to a CSV file. This file contains all the information shown under the Issued tab as well as any notes or messages that were included in any gift card emails.

GiveX integration

GiveX is a third-party gift card provider which can also be connected from within Bold Checkout. In order to use this integration, you will need to create an account with GiveX and obtain a host and user I.D. along with a password.

When connected to GiveX, all gift cards are created and managed on their platform. Bold Checkout will not show issued gift cards, balances, or options to cancel, for gift cards created in GiveX.

Alert: You can only be connected to one gift card provider at a time. If you are already connected to Bold Gift Cards, connecting to GiveX will cancel all issued gift cards created in Bold Gift Cards.

To connect to GiveX, please follow the steps below.

  1. From within Bold Checkout, select Payment options, then Gift Cards.
  2. Select Connect next to GiveX.
