Payment gateways
What is the difference between Shopify Checkout, Shopify Payments and Shop Pay?
Shopify Checkout
The Shopify Checkout is the secure area where your customers enter their shipping and payment information to complete their order from where you sell online. For more information, please visit Shopify’s Help Center.
Shopify Payments
Shopify Payments is a payment gateway by Shopify that allows you to easily accept payments online without the need to connect to a third-party payment provider. For more information, please visit Shopify’s Help Center.
Shop Pay
Shop Pay is an accelerated checkout that allows your customers to save their payment and shipping information so they can save time when purchasing items from any participating Shopify store. For more information, please visit Shopify’s Help Center.
What payment gateways are supported on Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout?
You can use Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout as long as you are using a compatible primary gateway such as Shopify Payments, Stripe, PayPal Express, and Authorize.net.
While you are not required to use Shopify Payments to use Shopify Checkout, it is one of the easiest ways to accept payments online.
If you use Shopify Payments, then you can enable Shop Pay to allow customers to save their shipping and payment information to help them check out faster.
Note: Shopify Payments or Authorize.net are required for the migration process due to Shopify's checkout limitations.
Stripe and Shopify Payments eligibility is controlled by Shopify directly. Please contact Shopify directly for specific inquiries as Stripe is only available to select merchants in cases where a store can’t use Shopify Payments.
What is a legacy payment gateway account and why can’t I migrate my tokens to Shopify Payments directly?
Currently, there is no functionality to facilitate mapping customer credit card information from Stripe, Braintree, or Authorize.net directly into Shopify Payments. Due to this, a secondary payment gateway migration is needed.
This requires connecting a “legacy” payment gateway (for Stripe, Braintree, or Authorize.net) within Shopify as a secondary payment gateway. All new subscriptions would process through Shopify Payments, while existing subscriptions continue to process through the former gateway.
When the payment method associated with the existing subscription expires (or is updated) and your customer enters their new payment information, it’s captured by Shopify Payments which then processes the payments going forward.
Do third-party gateway fees apply to transactions processed through legacy Stripe or Braintree gateways?
While gateways have their own transaction fees, in some cases Shopify will charge an additional third-party transaction fee depending on whether you are a Plus merchant and have Shopify Payments set up.
Shopify’s third-party transaction fees do not apply to orders processed through legacy gateways when a Plus merchant has Shopify Payments set up as the primary gateway.
I use Braintree on Subscriptions V1, but I want to use Authorize.net in Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout. How will that work?
A payment gateway migration would be required prior to migrating to Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout. Our team can work directly with those payment gateways to move their payment tokens over, however, it can take time for Braintree and Authorize.net to complete this work. Because of this, there is the possibility of downtime for existing recurrences as most of the work falls on the gateways. New subscriptions will process as normal.
Tip: It is possible to migrate from Braintree to Shopify Payments directly.
Technical
Do we have to use a Shopify Online Store 2.0 theme or will Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout work with a vintage theme?
A Shopify 2.0 theme is not required to complete the migration. However, many valuable features such as Prepaid Subscriptions, Convertible Subscriptions, and Express Add-ons do require Online Store 2.0 themes. If you do not need access to those features, our team is happy to complete a manual code installation on a vintage theme.
Is it possible to migrate if you are not a technical person? What do I need to do?
Absolutely! You do not need any technical expertise to migrate from Subscriptions V1 to Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout - our team will handle the majority of the work. The only things our team cannot do are the things that only a merchant has permission to do. These are as follows:
- Install Bold Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout to your store and theme.
- Create your subscription group(s) with your desired discounts and frequencies.
- Setup your payment gateway.
- Test to make sure it’s working as expected.
Our team will review your setup, and when everything is ready to go, you’ll be asked to make your new theme live on your store. You can see the step-by step instructions and videos in Migrating to Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout Walkthrough.
Will canceled, paused, and all subscription history migrate to Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout?
All active subscription data will migrate over - this includes all paused subscriptions. By default, canceled subscriptions do not migrate over. If you have specific needs requiring this, please discuss this with our team prior to your migration.
Historical data does not migrate directly, however, you can export your data from Subscriptions V1 for your own historical records. Some merchants choose to import this data into their own analytics or CRM tools.
We have a highly customized website, can Bold provide support?
We have public API documentation to support advanced customization on our Developer Docs. If your technical team requires additional support, we have technical specialists standing by that can help with specific questions based on our APIs and your build. When submitting your migration request, please provide details about your custom needs in the notes. Some shops may want to introduce custom widgets or changes to their theme. In those instances, Bold may recommend an agency or partner to help.
Can I customize the subscriptions widget without hiring a developer?
Yes! The subscription widget can be customized using the app block widget settings. You can change the borders, colors, and language without any technical skills. To see how to do this, please visit Customize the Subscription Widget App Block.
Features
I see that Bold Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout offers many new features including Maximizers. Is there an additional cost to these?
All of Bold’s new features are available out of the box, however, some Maximizers require the addition of Bold Upsell.
As a standalone app, Bold Upsell works to increase your average order value (AOV). With Bold Subscriptions it also works to increase your lifetime customer value (LTV). Upsell has its own price plans. Plans are usage-based starting at $9.99 per month and are adjusted every 30 days depending on the number of Upsell views and/or monthly store order count. Read more about this in Bold Upsell Pricing & Overview.
