Get Started with Bold Subscriptions



Bold Subscriptions allows you to offer your products to your customers on a recurring basis. This can be set up as a build-a-box, standard subscription, or convertible subscription to your customers.

Subscriptions is packed with features, such as the ability to send email notifications to your customers, and offer built-in subscription discounts.

Subscriptions requires liquid code to be inserted into your Shopify theme to work properly. Without this, the app will be unable to display properly on your store.

The liquid code installation can be quite complicated, but if you feel comfortable with coding and want to do it yourself just follow the Bold Subscriptions Code Install Instructions.

Before you can use Subscriptions, you must have a payment gateway connected to the app. This allows you to charge the customer, and also store their credit card data for their subscription. It can take awhile for your account to be approved for use, so do this as soon as possible.

Stripe and BrainTree are our top two recommendations. At this time, PayPal is not compatible with Bold Subscriptions.

There are three methods of presenting your subscriptions:

Multiple Products

Our most popular mode, Multiple Products, allows customers to buy both one-time and recurring purchases in the same cart. It means only one checkout experience is necessary. With this method, the option to subscribe will show up on your product pages, in a widget. They choose their recurring interval length and add the subscription to their cart, alongside any other products already in their cart.

Single Product

Single Product mode is similar to Multiple Products with one exception: upon selecting "Complete Subscription", the customer will be taken directly to the recurring checkout, without the chance to continue shopping. It will not stop in the cart, and the cart page will not be involved. They can only check out with one product at a time. It is a popular method for stores with monthly subscription box models, or have a smaller inventory available on subscription.

Recurring Cart

Recurring Cart places the subscription widget on your regular Shopify cart page, instead of individual product pages. It means the customer can build up their shopping cart with multiple items and subscribe to the whole cart. Keep in mind, the customer has to subscribe to the full cart, and can’t choose individual items. This method is most popular for stores where all products are offered on subscription, like grocery services, or local delivery.

If you choose to operate in Single Product or Multiple Products mode, you will need to configure your subscription groups. It involves selecting a set of criteria that define the rules for your subscriptions.

Note: This step does not apply to the Recurring Cart mode.

You can opt to offer all your products on subscription, or just specify certain products. You also might want to provide different subscription options for various products, in which case they need to be in their separate subscription groups, rather than all consolidated into one.

It’s best to go through all app settings before launching your subscriptions, so things go smoothly for your customers.

Email Templates

All emails are turned off by default; you will need to enable the emails that suit your needs. We have basic templates created for them but adding company branding is good practice.

Two recommended emails are:

  • Manage Subscription Order.
  • Credit Card Denied (to Customer).

Language Settings

If you would like to change the wording used by Subscriptions you can do so in the language settings.

The Manage Subscription area is where customers can log in and make adjustments to their subscription.

Our recurring checkout has its own US tax system, which needs to be enabled if you ship products within the US. If you don't enable this, our checkout is unable to calculate American taxes correctly. If you have a place of business in the US, you will have to configure this accordingly.
