Create a Subscription Customer Portal Offer

  • Updated

The Subscription Customer Portal offer works alongside Bold Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout to allow you to show product offers to your existing subscribers in the customer portal. Your customers can add the product to their existing subscription order as either a one-time purchase or a recurring order, depending on how you offer the product on your store.

This article describes how Subscription Customer Portal offers work and provides step-by-step instructions on how to set one up.

Subscription Customer Portal offers are displayed in the customer portal where your customers go to manage their existing subscriptions.

If your customer is subscribed to the product that you have designated as the trigger product in Upsell, once logged in to the customer portal, they will see the products you’ve designated as your offers near the top of the page.

If the product is available for subscription as well as one-time purchase, your customers will see two prices, the subscription price (with the subscription discount, if one exists) and the one-time price. If the product is available as a one-time purchase only or a subscription only, customers will only see one price.

Your customers can click on any offer to accept it and choose from the available purchase options.

Add offer

If your customer accepts a product in the offer, that product is no longer shown in the offer.

Views for this offer are counted as one per month, regardless of the number of times a customer sees it in their customer portal.

Each time a customer accepts a Subscription Customer Portal offer, Upsell records this data on the dashboard. Please visit View Upsell's Dashboard Metrics & Reporting for more details on the analytics available in Upsell.

Important considerations

  • A maximum of three products can be shown in the offer on the customer portal page. If more than three products are selected, Upsell will show the offer products at random.
  • Prepaid subscriptions should not be used as offer products.
  • Funnels, quantity selection, and minimum and maximum cart value restrictions are not available with these offers.
  • If a customer has multiple subscriptions, the offer is applied to their most recent subscription.

Video Walkthrough

To create your Subscription Customer Portal offer, please follow the instructions below.

Note: The trigger product for your Upsell offer must be a product your customers are already subscribed to in order for it to appear in their customer portal. If you haven’t already made this product available for subscription, please visit Create a Standard Subscription Group for step-by-step directions.

  1. From within Upsell, navigate to Offers > Create Offer.
  2. Enter an internal name for your offer.
  3. Click Set a trigger.
  4. Select Subscription Customer Portal.

  5. Under Trigger products, select one of the following two options:
    • Trigger an upsell on specific products - This option allows you to select specific products to act as the trigger product. If this option is selected, proceed to step #6.

Note: If a collection is selected, the collection must contain under 5000 products. A collection of 5000 products or more will cause an error.

    • Trigger an upsell on every product - This option will set all products on your store as a trigger for the offer. If this option is selected, skip to step #8.
  6. Choose Select Products, and select Add next to the product you would like to trigger the offer.

Note: You can select all of your products by clicking SELECT ALL RESULTS above the search results. To select individual variants, deselect the checkbox next to the Group variants by products text, then select Search again.

  7. Click Continue with selected products.
  8. Optional: Enter a Trigger quantity.

Note: The quantity restriction takes into account the number of products in a customer's existing existing subscription. For example, if you enter 2, the customer must be subscribed to a minimum of two of the trigger products in order to see the offer. If they are only subscribed to one, the offer will not show for them.

  9. In the Upsell offer section, select Set an Offer.
  10. Enter a Title and Description.
  11. Choose Select Products.
  12. Select Add next to the product(s) you are offering.

Note: Only three products can be shown in the customer portal at maximum.

  13. Click Continue with selected products.
  14. Optional: Click Set Date Range and enter your Start Date and End Date.
  15. Select Save Offer.
