Fastlane by PayPal

Fastlane by PayPal offers a streamlined checkout experience to existing Fastlane customers and allows new customers to quickly and easily save their payment and shipping information for a seamless checkout experience in the future.

Customers can use Fastlane wherever it’s available on the internet, allowing you to leverage a network of millions of PayPal customers. In addition, by reducing steps in the checkout Fastlane can help boost conversions and increase lifetime customer value.

Note: Fastlane is available for Adobe Commerce and Magento Open Source stores only, however, work is in progress to add support for Magento 1. If you would like to join the waitlist for Magento 1, please click here.

Customer experience

This section describes the checkout experience for different customers when Fastlane is enabled in the checkout.

Existing PayPal customer with a Fastlane profile

When the customer enters a PayPal associated email in the checkout, they receive a verification code by text which they can then enter into the checkout. Once validated, the checkout is automatically populated with their saved shipping, billing, and payment information. From here, they can either complete the order, or they can adjust their checkout information.

Customer without a Fastlane profile or PayPal associated email address

When the customer proceeds to the checkout, they enter their email address, shipping information, and payment information as usual. If the customer consents to save their payment profile with Fastlane (enabled by default) on the payment information page, a Fastlane profile is automatically created once they complete their order. Customers can also manually disable Fastlane account consent if they do not wish to save a Fastlane profile.

Note: Fastlane opt-in is only displayed to customers located in the United States. In addition, a Fastlane profile is created only if the customer enters a US based address and phone number.

Requirements

• An Adobe Commerce store with Bold Checkout or Bold Booster for PayPal installed.

  Note: The minimum required version for Bold Booster is 2.0.

• A PayPal Complete Payments (PPCP) or Braintree payment gateway connected in Bold Checkout.
• A store located in the United States, selling in USD.
• Must not be using 3D Secure.

Setup

To set up Fastlane with Bold-hosted checkout or Bold Booster for PayPal (formerly Payment Booster), please follow the relevant instructions below. 

Fastlane with Bold-hosted checkout

Step 1: Ensure Fastlane is enabled in your PayPal account.

If you are using PPCP, Fastlane should be enabled automatically. If you are using Braintree, log in to your PayPal account, navigate to Account Settings > Customer Checkout, and turn on Fastlane. 

Step 2: Edit your payment gateway settings in Bold Checkout.

If you currently have PPCP or Braintree connected in Bold Checkout, please use the following instructions to edit your payment gateway settings.

Alert: If you are connecting a payment gateway for the first time, please use the full setup instructions in Connect PayPal Complete Payments in Bold Checkout or Connect Braintree in Bold Checkout.

1. Login to Bold Account Center, and open Bold Checkout.
2. Navigate to Payment options > Payment gateways.
3. Next to your connected PayPal Complete Payments or Braintree payment gateway, click on the ellipsis to edit the settings.
4. Check the box to enable Fastlane by PayPal.

   Note: PayPal branded buttons can be used alongside Fastlane.

5. Optional: Click Style Fastlane to access the Advanced Style Settings.

   Note: Styles must meet PayPal’s standards for accessibility. For more information, please visit PayPal’s developer docs.

6. Click Save.

Fastlane with Bold Booster for PayPal

Step 1: Ensure Fastlane is enabled in your PayPal account.

If you are using PPCP, Fastlane should be enabled automatically. If you are using Braintree, log in to your PayPal account, navigate to Account Settings > Customer Checkout, and turn on Fastlane. 

Step 2: Edit your payment gateway settings in Bold Checkout.

If you currently have PPCP or Braintree connected in Bold Checkout, please use the following instructions to edit your payment gateway settings.

Alert: If you are connecting a payment gateway for the first time, please use the full setup instructions in Connect PayPal Complete Payments in Bold Checkout or Connect Braintree in Bold Checkout.

1. Login to Bold Account Center, and open Bold Checkout.
2. Navigate to Payment options > Payment gateways.
3. Next to your connected PayPal Complete Payments or Braintree payment gateway,
4. , click on the ellipsis to edit the settings.
5. Check the box to enable Fastlane by PayPal.

   Note: PayPal branded buttons can be used alongside Fastlane.

6. Optional: Click Style Fastlane to access the Advanced Style Settings.

7. Click Save.

Step 3: Enable Fastlane in the Adobe Commerce Admin

1. In the Adobe Commerce admin, navigate to Stores > Configuration.

   

2. In the left-hand menu of the Configuration page, navigate to Sales > Checkout.

   

3. If you have multiple websites, find the Scope drop-down menu at the top of the page, and select the website you would like to configure. Skip this step if you are in Single Store Mode.

   

4. Expand the Bold Checkout Payment Booster Extension section.
5. Next to the Is Fastlane enabled setting, uncheck Use Default, and use the dropdown menu to select Yes.

   

6. Optional: Next to Fastlane Payment Title, uncheck Use Default, and enter your desired payment title.
7. Click Save Config.
8. Navigate to the Cache Management page, and click the Flush Magento Cache button.
