Standard Subscriptions

Standard subscription groups are a great way to sell your products on a recurring basis.

Adding multiple products into one subscription group is useful if you want to allow customers to swap products, and creating multiple subscription groups is beneficial in order to set different discounts, intervals, and information for each different subscription group.

This article is relevant to Subscriptions V1. If you have Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout on your store, please visit Create a Standard Subscription Group in Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout. If you are unsure of which version of Bold Subscriptions you have, please visit Identify Your Version of Bold Subscriptions.

 Walkthrough

Functionality

Once a standard subscription group has been created and enabled, the subscription widget will appear on your product page(s) that customers can interact with.

Standard Subscription Widget Example

If a standard subscription is set to only be purchasable as a subscription, the subscription widget will remove the one-time purchase option. Then, when a customer adds the product into their cart, the product will automatically be added as a subscription.

When a customer proceeds into the checkout with a subscription product in the cart, they will be directed to the recurring checkout page. The recurring checkout must be used in order for products to be captured as a recurring subscription.

  1. From within Bold Subscriptions V1, select Subscriptions, then My Subscriptions.

  2. Select Create Subscription Group.

  3. Enter an Internal Subscription Name.

  4. Select a Subscription Type.

Note: If you choose standard, please continue with this guide. If you select Convertible, please visit Convertible Subscriptions to set this up.

  5. Under Step 2: Select Product(s), click on Select products.

  6. Select ADD next to the product(s) you wish to add.

  7. Select Continue with selected products.

  8. Optional: Select the Allow Swapping of Products check box.

Note: When this option is selected, your customers will be able to swap the product they are subscribed to with another product in the same subscription group. For more information on this feature, please visit Product Swapping in Bold Subscriptions V1.

  9. Under Step 3: Select Intervals, you are given two options:

    Select Inverval Options Example

    • Let customer select order interval

      • This option allows customers to select the product's subscription frequency interval. The frequency intervals can be set to Days, Weeks, Months and Years, allowing customers to choose how often they want the subscription to renew again.
    • Set a fixed order interval

      • This option allows you to select a set frequency that the subscription will renew on. Similar to the customer select order interval option, you can choose Days, Weeks, Months or Years. If Weeks or Months is selected, you can also select which day of the week or which day of the month all customers recurring orders are generated on.

Note: You can only select one fixed order interval frequency. This means that if you wanted to offer a fixed bi-weekly interval and a fixed monthly interval on the same product(s), you would need to create a variant for each frequency in your Shopify admin and then set those variants in multiple subscription groups.

  10. Select Subscription only or Subscription and one time purchase for the recurring option.

  11. Optional: Select a Maximum Subscription Length.

Note: If Maximum Subscription Length is enabled, you can also setup Prepaid Subscriptions by enabling Allow customers to prepay for subscriptions and then adding in prepaid frequencies. For more information on setting up this feature, please visit Prepaid Subscriptions.

    Prepaid Enable Option

    Prepaid Frequency Example

  12. Optional: Set a Minimal Fulfilled Order Requirement amount.

  13. Optional: Under Step 4: Offer a Discount, select Offer the same discount on all orders or Offer different discounts on initial and recurring orders and enter a discount amount you would like to offer.

Note: Only a percentage discount can be applied for dynamic discounts. If you are uncertain of what discount percentage to use, you can determine the discount percentage using the following percentage calculator tool.

Additionally, if you are using dynamic discounting and there is a product swap, the initial discount is repeated. To avoid this situation (where the customer gets the initial discount on the new product), you must check the box Apply recurring discount when swapping products when setting up the discount rule. This will ensure product swapping also follows the discount rule set and the discount is not repeated.

    Example

For example, if you set 50% discount on initial order and 0% on recurring orders, then the customer gets 50% off their first order and then price switches back to the full price. If they swap products, the rule is reset and they get 50% off the new product again.

Select the checkbox next to Apply Recurring Discount when swapping products
