By default, Bold Subscriptions V1 uses Shopify's shipping zones to calculate your customer's shipping costs. If your customers are eligible for multiple shipping rates during checkout, they will be provided the ability to choose, similar to how the Shopify checkout functions.
If your store uses Bold Cashier (not available for new installation), the shipping zones from Bold Cashier will determine where your store will ship to, and how much it will cost to ship. Please visit Shipping Rates in Bold Cashier for more information.
This article is relevant to Subscriptions V1. If you have Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout on your store, please visit Shipping Rates in Subscriptions for Shopify Checkout. If you are unsure of which version of Bold Subscriptions you have, please visit Identify Your Version of Bold Subscriptions.
There may be cases where there's more than one Shopify shipping rate that applies to your customer's order. This is common when using carrier-calculated rates, or a special express rate.
If your customers purchase both a one-time product and subscription product in the same cart, the shipping rate will be subject to change on their second order. This is because of the one-time product being removed from their 2nd order.
If your customer is eligible for multiple shipping rates, you can manage the default shipping rate that gets applied.
- Selecting the cheapest shipping rate will automatically apply the cheapest shipping rate.
- Selecting the closest shipping rate will automatically apply the most similar shipping rate to the customer's previous rate with the same carrier. This setting is best suited for stores that rely on Shopify's carrier-calculated shipping rates.
For example: If you have both FedEx and UPS rates and your customer chooses FedEx on their first order, Bold Subscriptions will default them to a new FedEx rate if their shipping information changes. This will occur even if the rate is more expensive than switching the provider from FedEx to UPS.
Note: No matter which option you select for the default, your customers will always have the option to sign in and adjust their shipping provider if they're eligible for multiple options. It will also prompt them to choose or confirm a new rate if they decide to adjust their subscription order.

FAQs
Whenever a change is made to your customer's orders, Bold Subscriptions V1 will automatically review the change to see if a new Shopify shipping rate needs to be applied.
Changes that would trigger this behavior include:
- Changes to the products.
- Changes to the order information.
- Changes to the order quantity.
If your subscriber's second order does not completely match their first (IE. they've purchased both a one-time item and subscription in the same cart), Bold Subscriptions will check for a change in the shipping rate.
At this time, we are only able to calculate and apply Shopify's shipping rates to the order amount before discounts are applied. Shipping rates will apply to the order subtotal and not the discounted subtotal of your customer's order.
This is a known limitation.
If you have deleted a Shopify shipping rate that was connected to a customer's subscription, your customer will then be grandfathered into the now deleted shipping rate. This means that your customers will continue to be charged for their shipping even if the rate has been deleted, unless there's an update to the order that causes the shipping rates to change.
Changes that would trigger this behavior include:
- Changes to the products.
- Changes to the order quantity.
- Changes to the shipping address on file.
If the Subscriptions checkout page is not able to pull Shopify's shipping rates, this likely means that your store is currently password protected.
- If your store requires a password in order to access the storefront, you will need to disable the password in order to allow your customers to select a shipping rate.
- If your store is public and you are seeing this message, please check your Shopify shipping settings to ensure that you have enough shipping rates enabled.
If you have adjusted a Shopify shipping rate that was connected to a customer's subscription, your customer will then be grandfathered into the now changed shipping rate. This means that your customers will continue to be charged for their shipping even if the rate has been changed, unless there's an update to the order that causes the shipping rates to change.
Example
A shipping rate that's used by a subscriber is changed from $5.00 to $10.00. In order to update an existing subscriber to the new $10.00 shipping rate, the following steps will need to be performed for each customer.
- From within the Bold Subscriptions V1 app admin, select Customers.
- Select a customer, then select Edit.
- Select Actions > Edit Shipping Method.
- Select the new shipping rate, then select Update.
When making adjustments to your shipping rates, you may need to request an internal shipping rate refresh. Please contact our Customer Success team for any further assistance.
Please know that changes or additions made to your Shopify shipping rates can take anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour before being reflected in Bold Subscriptions V1.
Adding new Shopify shipping rates will make that rate available for your new subscribers as well as be offered as an option for your existing subscribers to switch to. New rates will not be automatically applied to an existing subscription if an applicable rate is already on the order.
If you have integrated another shipping app with Bold Subscriptions, our app will not be able to pull the different rates when a change is made to your customer's orders.
