With Bold Subscriptions, your customers orders will automatically default to using your Shopify shipping rates within our checkout. If they are eligible for multiple shipping rates within your store, then it will give them the option to choose. This is similar to how it would be showing within your Shopify checkout.
If your store also uses Bold Cashier, then the shipping zones from this app will determine where your store will ship to, and how much it will cost to ship to that region of the world. Please see our article for more information on Adding Shipping Zones in Cashier.
Important Details when using Shopify Shipping Rates
There may be cases where there is more than one Shopify shipping rate that applies to your customers order. This would be common when using a carrier calculated shipping rate, or a special express rate.
When your customers make purchases with both one-time products and subscription products, then the shipping rate is subject to change on their second order. This would be caused by the change in quantity of products being ordered.
If your customer is eligible for multiple shipping rates within your Shopify settings, you are able to manage the default shipping rate that applies.
To select a default Shipping rate selection, please follow these steps:
- From Shopify's admin, select Apps.
- Select Bold Subscriptions.
- Select Settings, then General.
- Scroll down to "Shopify shipping Rates" and select one of the two options:
The option for Selecting the cheapest shipping rate will automatically default your customer to the cheapest shipping option for your customer.
The option for Selecting the closest shipping rate will automatically assign the shipping rate most similar to their previous rate with the same carrier. This would be best suited for a store that relies on carrier calculated shipping rates within Shopify.
For example, if you have both FedEx and UPS rates available and your customer chooses FedEx on their first order, it will default them to a new FedEx rate if their shipping information changes. Even if it is more expensive than switching the provider to UPS.
Note: No matter which option you select for the default, your customer will have the option to sign in and adjust their shipping provider if they are eligible for multiple options It will also prompt them to choose or confirm a new rate if they decide to make adjustments to their subscription order.
Shopify Shipping Rates FAQ
What causes Shipping rates to change within an order?
Whenever a change is made to your customers orders, the Bold Subscriptions app will automatically review the change to see if a new Shopify shipping rate would apply to the order. These changes include changes in the products, order information, and order quantity.
If your subscribers second order does not completely match their first, then the Bold Subscriptions will check for a change in shipping rate. This would apply if your customer makes a purchase that includes both one-time purchases, and subscription purchases in the same order.
Since the one-time purchases will not reflect in your customers second order, that will prompt the shipping rates to be detected.
What happens if I offer a Subscribe & Save discount on my products, and use Shopify shipping rates?
At this time, we are only able to calculate and apply the Shopify shipping rates to the order amount before any subscription discount, or discount code being applied. Shipping rates will apply to the order subtotal, and not the discounted Subtotal of your customer order.
This limitation is due to our integration access to Shopify's shipping API, and is a known limitation from working with Shopify.
What happens if I delete a Shopify shipping rate that is currently attached to subscription orders?
If a Shopify shipping rate that was attached to one of your existing customers subscription is deleted from your settings, it will still keep your customer on this plan. They will be grandfathered on their shipping rate unless there is an update to the order that causes the shipping rates to change.
Changes that can cause these updates to be forced would be a change in quantity of your customers subscription order, product changes, or changes to the shipping address on file.
Why does the Subscription checkout say "no available shipping rates"?
If the Subscriptions checkout page is not able to pull in Shopify's shipping rates, this may mean that your store is currently password protected. If your store currently requires a password to access it, you will need to make it public in order to allow your customers to select a shipping rate.
If your store is currently public and you are seeing this message, please check your Shopify shipping settings to ensure that you have sufficient rates enabled.
If I change the pricing or names of my Shopify shipping rates, does Bold Subscriptions automatically update those to new shipping rate prices and labels?
When making adjustments to your shipping rates, it may require an internal shipping rate refresh. Please contact our Merchant Success team for any further assistance in refreshing this information for you!
Please know that changes or additions made to your Shopify shipping rates can take anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour to reflect in Bold Subscriptions.
What happens if I add a brand new Shopify shipping rate?
Adding new Shopify shipping rates will make that rate available for your new subscribers, and will also be offered as an option for your existing subscribers to switch to. It will be unable to automatically apply to any existing subscriptions if another applicable rate is already attached.
If you use another shipping app integrated with Subscriptions, then our app will be unable to pull the different rates when a change is made to your customers orders.
