Product Swapping in Bold Subscriptions

Please note that this article only relates to Version 1 of Bold Subscriptions. Please visit Bold Subscriptions V1 & V2 Comparison for more information on determining which version of Bold Subscriptions you are currently on.

The Product Swap feature in Bold Subscriptions V1 allows your customers to swap the products they have in their current subscription. This gives you an easy way to provide different products, sizes, meals, etc to your customers, and allows them the freedom to switch their products from order to order.

This is an elective feature, so you can choose to offer this as an option in your subscriptions.

Note: This feature is currently incompatible with the Recurring Cart Mode, and Build a Box Subscriptions.

When editing or creating a subscription group, you will see an option in Step 1 that says, "Allow Swapping of Products". This feature is selected by default. Deselect if it is not necessary for this subscription group.

If you leave this box checked, it means any products in the subscription group can be swapped out for another item in the same group. Your customer will be unable to swap an item in their current subscription for a product within separate subscription group.

Allow Swapping Of Products

For your customers to swap their subscription products, they need to be logged into their Shopify account within your store. When they are logged in, they will have access to the "Manage Subscription page" to make changes to their current subscription order.

Your customers will then be able to view their subscription(s), and have the option to swap to a new product within their subscription in this area.

Swapping a Prepaid Subscription

If your customer has signed up with a prepaid subscription and switches to a lower cost item, it will keep the price as-is. This means that they will not be automatically refunded the difference. It is important to consider this when building the subscription group of swappable products.

When your prepaid customers swap for a more expensive product, you will see an order generate in Shopify that indicates the additional charge was put through. The title of the order will be "subscription modification", and the note on the order will indicate which product was swapped.

Complete a Swap

We want you to feel as confident with this feature as your customers will be. Here are the steps to swap a product on a live subscription from the Manage Subscription page:

  1. Select Products in your Subscription. A dropdown will open with the items in the subscription.

    Select Products in Your Subscription

  2. Select Swap Product. This will populate a list of all products that your customer can swap to, along with the variants. This also indicates any additional charges that the customers will incur if they choose to swap for a more expensive product.

    Select Swap Product

  3. Once your customer selects which product they would like to swap within their subscription, they will be asked to confirm the new shipping costs. After selecting Save Changes, the products will be swapped and a confirmation message will be displayed to your customers.
