Create a Standard Subscription Group

Overview

Setting up a subscription group on your store is great to allow your customers to purchase any of your products on a recurring basis. 

Within Bold Subscriptions Pro, you can create a group which determines which products you would like to offer your customers as a Subscription. You can select each of the item(s) you want to include in the group, how frequently your customers will receive their products, and even offer them an incentive discount for subscribing.

Functionality

Once a standard subscription group has been created and activated within Bold Subscriptions Pro, a subscription widget will appear on the product page that customers will see, and select to purchase the product.

If a subscription is set to only be purchase-able as a subscription, the widget will remove the One-time purchase option. When the product is added into your customers cart, the product will be added as a subscription by default. 

When your customer proceeds into the checkout page, if the user has a subscription in their cart, they will be redirected to the Bold Checkout. This checkout must be used in order for your store's product in the subscription to be captured as a recurring payment.

Single Cart Mode

By default, when a subscription product is added to your customers cart, they will be able to continue shopping. This means that multiple items can be added to the cart prior to your customer checking out their order. This is referred to as "Multiple Cart Mode", as it allows both subscriptions & one time purchases to be within the cart.

When creating your subscription group, you have the option of changing how your customers are taken to the cart. By enabling the option "Send customers directly to checkout instead of adding to cart", your customers will be taken directly to the checkout when opting to purchase your subscription product.

Subscription Frequency

Adjusting the Subscription Frequency options allows you to choose how often your recurring orders are generated. These options will be available for your customers to select when they go to purchase a subscription on your store.

Cutoff days allow merchants to set-up deadlines for fixed subscription frequencies. This feature is useful to ensure that the recurring order does not take place too soon after the initial subscription purchase on your store.

When using cutoff days, you are able to set a number of days before the recurring order is scheduled, as well as a cutoff time. Orders that are created before the cutoff will be included in the upcoming recurrence cycle. For example, an order created in January after the cutoff date will have the fulfillment delayed until February, and the first recurrence set for March.

Non-Fixed Subscription Frequency:

The subscription recurs at the interval set using the basic options. For non-fixed frequencies, each customer can have a different date at which their order will reoccur.

Daily will recur every number of days you select.

Weekly will recur every number of weeks on the day of the week that the original order was placed.(For example, when an initial order is placed on a Thursday, the recurring order will complete every following Thursday on a weekly basis).

Monthly will recur every number of months you select, on the same day of the month as the original order. If an order was placed on the 31st, the order for the next month will use the next closest date (For example, an order placed on Jan 31st will recur on feb 28th, or in the case of a leap year the 29th.)

Yearly will recur every number of years you select, on the month and day that the original order was placed.

 

Fixed Subscription Frequency:

Fixed Subscription Frequencies are subscription groups that recur at fixed intervals (For example, each month on the 15th, every week on Monday, etc.). This is different from non-fixed subscription frequencies because regardless of when the order was placed, all orders for a recurrence cycle happen at the same time.

The cutoff day controls are available with the respective recurrence type when using the following settings under the Advanced Settings.

You are able to specify a day of the week or month where orders are generated. Advanced options such as RRULES allow for frequencies to match your fulfillment cycles using cut-off days.

Set-up

When creating your subscription, you will be presented with multiple features that can be enabled within the group. For an explanation of these features and a step-by-step on creating your subscription group, please follow these steps

  1. From BigCommerce's admin, select Apps.

  2. Select Bold Subscriptions Pro.

  3. Select Subscription Groups.

  4. Select Create Subscription Group.

  5. Enter a Group name.

    Note: This is an internal name, your customers will not see it.

  6. Select Select Products.

  7. Select the checkbox beside all of the products you'd like to include in the group.

  8. Select Confirm.

  9. Select Customers can only purchase these products with a subscription (optional).

    This feature will make it so the one-time purchase option is removed from the subscription widget on the product page.

  10. Set your Subscription Frequency. Select Days, Weeks, Months or Years.

  11. Select Show advanced options.

    There are a few different options to choose from:

    On Purchase Day
    This will cause the customer's subscription to renew based on the first date of their purchase.

    On specific day of the month
    This will cause the customer's subscription to renew on the same day every month; regardless of their date of purchase.

    Custom occurrence
    This allows you to set up custom logic for when your customers subscriptions will renew. Additional choices will show after selecting this option.

  12. Enter Frequency name.

  13. Select Save Frequency.

  14. Select Send customers directly to checkout instead of adding to cart (optional).

    When this feature is enabled, it will take your customers to the checkout right away with only this subscription product in their cart. This step completely skips the cart page, and will stop your customers from continuing shopping.

  15. Select Offer a discount for subscribing (optional).

    This provides a "Subscribe & Save!" incentive to your customers.

  16. Select Save Changes.
