Loyalty Points

B
Written by Brysen Kliever

Loyalty Points turns a membership plan into an earn-and-redeem program. Members collect points automatically when they place orders via a flat amount per order and/or a rate based on how much they spend. Members also earn through bonus actions like joining the plan, celebrating a birthday, leaving a product review, or following the store on social media. Points convert to real money off: at checkout, members apply their balance (all of it, or a partial amount they choose) and the discount comes off the order automatically without the need of any discount codes being applied from your members.

Behind the scenes, points are awarded when an order is paid, and any active VIP tier multipliers or bonus-point campaigns are applied automatically. Refunds applied to orders automatically remove earned points from the refunded order, so loyalty points stay honest.

Use cases

  • The everyday rewards plan - A free "Insider" plan earns 3% back in points on every order, an example incentive for shoppers to create an account and keep coming back.

  • Tiered generosity - A paid "Gold" plan earns points at a higher rate than the free tier, making the upgrade math easy to see ("earn double points as a Gold member").

  • VIP status laddering - With VIP tiers enabled, members who spend more (or order more often) climb tiers that multiply their earn rate, turning your best customers into your most rewarded ones.

  • Engagement beyond orders - Award a join bonus so new members start with a balance, birthday points to mark the occasion, and points for reviews or social follows to build community between purchases.

Step 1: Choose Loyalty Points as the membership plan

  1. From within Bold Memberships, navigate to Membership Plans.

  2. Click Create Plan.

  3. Click the checkbox next to Loyalty Points and click Next.

Step 2: Configure billing options

In this step, configure the billion options you would like your customers to choose from when subscribing to your membership plan.

Billing managed by this app

If this option is chosen, you can set one or more billing options your customers can choose from when subscribing to your membership plan. Under Billion Option 1, configure the following options:

  • Price - Set the base price of the billing option.

Note: The value entered for the price field uses your default store currency.

  • Billing Frequency - Choose how often your customers are charged for this billing option. The options you have to choose from are Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, Annually or One-time Purchase.

  • Maximum Cycles - If you select a billing frequency that isn't One-time purchase, you can set how long you would like to charge your customers. Keeping the default option "Unlimited" selected will charge your customers forever until the subscription is cancelled. If you would like to stop billing your customers after a certain amount of cycles has been achieved, click the dropdown option and choose a value between 1-99.

  • Enable Free Trial - If you select a billing frequency that isn't One-time purchase, you can offer a free trial to allow your customers to try the membership plan.

If you would like to offer multiple billing options to your customers, click Add Billing Option at the bottom and repeat the same steps as needed. You can offer up to 5 billing options per membership plan.

Billing and membership enrollment managed by another app or subscription platform

If this option is chosen, you can enter a customer tag or metafield to apply to the customer once they sign up for the membership plan. The tag or metafield you enter is then used with another application, such as Bold Subscriptions, on your store to determine how you bill your active members.

All customers (free)

If this option is chosen, the membership plan will be free for all customers that sign up.

Step 3: Configure plan rules

In this step, configure the rules for the Loyalty Points membership plan.

How members earn

In the first section, choose how members earn points. You can either choose points per dollar spent or a percentage back. You can enter your dollar or percentage off in the next section or use the slide bar to choose a value you would like to set for your members. If you're uncertain what amount to use, a few examples are available at the top of the configuration page that can be chosen at either 1%, 3% or 5%.

Fine tune (optional)

Under Fine tune, you can set how much that members earn on their first reward. While this setting is optional, this can help incentivize your customers to purchase more on their first order and in return earn more points for the reward.

Live preview

Under Live preview, this will show a visual example of what your loyalty points reward modal will appear as to your storefront members.

Redeeming points

In this section, you can specify how many points need to be earned before customers can start redeeming points, as well as a maximum amount of points that a member can redeem at a time. Setting a minimum and maximum can help ensure customers aren't creating multiple accounts if you are offering a larger reward for the first order.

Points expiry

If you would like to set an expiry for earned points, enable the checkbox in this section and specify the expiration timeframe by months and enter an expiry warning.

Hold period

This allows you to set a hold of when the points are applied to each member order after the order is paid. If you would like points to be applied immediately once the order is purchased, leave the field empty.

Ways to earn

In this setting, you can enable other ways members can earn points outside of purchasing orders. The following options are available:

  • Join bonus

  • Birthday bonus

  • Product review

  • Social follow

Enable the options you would like and set the amount of points earned for each option. If Social follow is enabled, you can set whether each follow needs to be manually approved or is automatically approved after 15 minutes. You also need to enter the link in which your members need to follow for each of your social media channels.

VIP tiers

This setting allows you to offer higher tiers for more frequent active members. To enable VIP tiers, enable the checkbox next to Enable VIP tiers and set as many tiers as needed, along with the rules for each tier created.

Step 4: Configure plan details

In this step, configure the details of the membership plan that your customers see on your storefront.

Plan name

Enter a title for your membership plan. The title used will be visible to your storefront customers.

Description

Enter a description for your membership plan, such as what benefits you are offering, your available price plans, etc.

Image

You can upload or choose an existing image to display on your membership plan. If uploading an image, please ensure you upload an image type of JPG, PNG or WebP of a max size of 5MB and ensure the image size is 800 x 800 px.

Membership Available

If enabled, the membership plan will be available for new customers on the storefront. If disabled, the membership plan will not be visible on your storefront and existing members signed up to the plan will still remain active on the plan.

Enable POS selling

If enabled, customers can be signed up on the Shopify POS sales channel.

For each registration field, you can set whether customers need to input an answer or choose from existing options in a dropdown format. For each registration field created, you can determine whether the field is required or optional by selecting the checkbox next to Required Field.

Click Add Registration Field and repeat the same steps for additional registration fields as needed.
