In this article, you will find more information on the available discount methods in Bold Bundles, how you can identify which discount method you are currently on, and how you can switch to a different discount method.

Discount methods

In Bold Bundles, the discounts are applied onto the storefront differently, depending on the discount method that Bundles using. There are currently three different discount methods available in Bundles. They are:

  • Variant Dependant Method
  • Draft Order Method
  • Accelerated Draft Order Method

Each method has benefits and limitations; you can decide which one works best for your business.

Note: By default, the Accelerated method is supplied on new installs of Bundles.

Read through the sections below for more information on the benefits and limitations of each discounting method.

Variant Dependant Method (Version 1)

Note: The Premium version of Bundles is incompatible with the Variant Dependant Method. Certain features that the Premium version provides (combo products, BOGOs, etc.) do not work correctly with this discounting method.

With this method, Bundles creates a duplicate variant of each original for each customer level/tag in that product. Those duplicate variants are an exact copy of the ones that already exist but have the discounted price you applied.

Benefits

  • Discount codes can still be used in the checkout.
  • Storefront price displays more quickly.
  • Allows checkouts directly from the cart page with third-party payment gateways (i.e. PayPal and Amazon).

Known limitations

  • Unable to hide discounts reliably from other apps (i.e. social media and other third-party Shopify apps).
  • Too many variants can become cumbersome for some stores to manage.
  • Limited by Shopify's 100 variant per product limit.
  • Wait time to keep discounts in sync with latest store prices.
  • Not compatible with inventory management apps (an exception to this is StitchLabs). This problem is because they see the variants created by the app as individual product listings.
  • If you use discount codes, they can stack on the existing Bold Bundles discount which may result in double discounting.
  • Sometimes allows customers to purchase out of stock items.
  • Premium plan of Bundles cannot be used on this discount method.

Draft Order Method (Version 2)

With this method, a draft order is created with the discounts and processed when the user selects the checkout button.

Benefits

  • No variants are created.
  • Faster syncing to keep discounts in sync with latest store prices.
  • More compatible with inventory management apps.
  • Follows Shopify's out of stock rules.
  • Products don’t have tagging information appended to the product name.
  • No need to pause the app when importing or editing products in the Shopify admin.

Note: If the product you are updating is included in an active bundle, it is still recommended to pause that specific bundle first.

Known limitations

  • Third-party checkout buttons (i.e. Amazon, Apple, PayPal) should be hidden on the cart page and visible in the checkout.
  • You cannot use Shopify discount codes at all (this may be a benefit, depending on your business).
  • Draft orders will remain in your Shopify admin after a customer has checked out.

Note: These can be deleted manually.

Accelerated Draft Order Method (Version 3)

With this method, a draft order is also created (with the customer's discount) and processed when they select the checkout button.

Benefits

  • No variants are created.
  • Even faster syncing than the Draft Orders method to keep discounts in sync with latest store prices.
  • More compatible with inventory management apps.
  • Follows Shopify's out of stock rules.
  • Products don’t have tagging information appended to the Product name.
  • Gain access to the newest features (Buy/Get partial discounts, Buy X Collection, Get Y Collection)
  • No need to pause the app when importing or editing products in the Shopify admin.

Note: If the product you are updating is included in an active bundle, it is still recommended to pause that specific bundle first.

Known limitations

  • Third-party checkout buttons (i.e. Amazon Pay, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.) should be hidden on the cart page and only visible in the checkout.
  • Third-party checkouts will not work correctly with Bundles (except for Bold Cashier).
  • Most currency converters must be disabled before offering bundle discounts.
  • Shopify discount codes will not work with Bundles (this may be a benefit, depending on the sales you're offering).
  • Draft orders will remain in your Shopify admin after a customer has checked out.

Note: These can be deleted manually.

Identify your discount method

It's important to know which discount method you are currently using in Bundles as you'll want to be sure the discount method you are using is best for your needs. For instance, if you are on the Draft Order Method (V2) and would like to offer discount codes on top of your bundle discounts, you will need to switch to the Variant Dependant Method (V1).

The discount method can be identified from within the app admin under Settings > General

Both Variant Dependant Method (V1) and Draft Order Method (V2) will be displayed as Bold Product Bundles 2.0 in app, however, V1 is known as the Variant Dependent Method, and V2 is the Draft Order Method. See the examples below to identify your Bundles version.

Switch discount methods

Are you looking to switch to a discount method that better suits your store's needs? Or are you looking to get the most out of Bundles by switching to the Accelerated Draft Order Method?

Depending on the discount method you are currently on and the discount method you want to transition to, you may need to reach out to our Customer Success team for further assistance.

For more information on how to change from one discount method to another, please see the following transition steps below.

Variant Dependant Method (V1) to Draft Orders Method (V2) (or vice versa)

Alert: You cannot switch to the Variant Dependant Method while on the Premium plan of Bundles. You must switch to the Basic plan in order to switch to the Variant Dependant Method. You can find this option within Bundles under Settings > Price Plan.

  1. From within the app admin, turn off all Bundle groups and allow the sync to complete.
  2. Navigate to Settings General
  3. Select Switch to this method beside the discount method you would like to use.

After this has been completed, all of your bundle groups will start to sync in Bundles to reflect the change made. After the bundles have finished syncing, please ensure that the storefront is working correctly by adding one of the bundles to the checkout page.

If you experience any issues with the bundle functionality after switching the discount method, please reach out to our Customer Success team for further assistance.

Draft Order Method (V2) to Accelerated Draft Order Method (V3)

If you would like to switch from Bundles V2 to Bundles V3, some Liquid code will need to be installed on your theme. Before doing this, we recommend to make a backup copy of the theme you'd like to perform the installation on. Once that is done, you can follow the steps below.

  1. From the homepage of the Bundles admin, select Settings, then General.
  2. Select Begin Update.

Note: This option will be greyed out if your site is using a conflicting Bold app.

    Begin Update

  3. Select one of the following options:

    Update options

    • Automatic update: After selecting this option you'll be asked to confirm which theme you'd like to install the app's code on. You'll then need to select Update. The app will begin an automatic install, and update the version. This should take 5-10 minutes to complete.

Troubleshooting: If your theme is too complex, it may attempt the installation indefinitely. Should this occur, please request an installation from our team.

    • Manual update: If you'd like to select this option, you will need to complete the manual liquid code installation first. After you've finished the coding installation, select Update. Bundles will begin updating the app; which should take roughly 5-10 minutes to complete.

Note: Selecting the Manual Update option will not automatically install the necessary Liquid code. It will only update the Bundle version and discount method.

  4. Select Dismiss.
