Create an Upsell Offer

An Upsell pitches a higher-value alternative to the product a shopper is viewing ,  a premium version, a larger size, or an upgraded version. When the shopper accepts, the original item in their cart is replaced with the upsold product.

This article walks through creating an Upsell offer in Bold Upsell, from picking the offer type to publishing it live.

Note: Upsell offers can only be triggered from the product page and are displayed as a pop-up.


Before you start

  • Bold Upsell is installed and the app embed is enabled in your live theme. See Activate Bold Upsell.

  • You have decided which product (the trigger) you want to replace and which higher-value product you want to offer in its place.


Step 1: Choose Upsell as the offer type

From the Bold Upsell admin:

  1. Go to Manual offers and click Create new offer.

  2. On the Choose your offer type page, select Upsell.

  3. Click Continue.


Step 2: Configure your Upsell

On the configuration page you will set up everything the shopper sees and how the offer triggers.

Name your offer

Give the offer an internal name so you can identify it later in the Manual offers list. Shoppers will never see this name.

Choose your trigger products

The trigger is the product(s) the shopper must be viewing for the Upsell to appear.

  1. Click Select products.

  2. Pick one or more products, specific variants, or an entire collection.

  3. Click Save selection.

Choose the upsell product

The upsell product is the higher-value item that will replace the trigger when the shopper accepts.

  1. Under Upsell offer, click Select products.

  2. Pick the product or variant you want to upsell to.

  3. Click Save selection.

Pro-Tip: Upsells work best when there is a clear upgrade story, a larger size, quantity, or a premium tier of the same product.

Write your title and description 

This is the headline and supporting copy the shopper sees in the pop-up. You can keep the default copy or write your own. For best results, keep it short, benefit-led, and specific. For example: "Upgrade to the 1L bottle" with a description like "Save 15% per ounce when you size up."

Choose your display style

Pick how products appear inside the pop-up:

  • Carousel - products are displayed side by side in the Upsell popup modal.

  • List - products stack vertically. This option is best when customers are comparing at a glance.

Optional: Adjust settings

Open Additional options to fine-tune behavior:

  • Allow quantity selection - let shoppers choose how many of the upsold product they add.

  • Discount offer product - apply a percentage or fixed discount to the upsold product as an incentive to accept.

Optional: Add conditions

Conditions control when the Upsell is eligible to show:

  • Date range - run the offer only between a start and end date (great for launches and seasonal promos).

  • Cart value minimum/maximum - only show the Upsell when the cart total reaches a threshold.

  • Minimum quantity trigger - only show the Upsell when the trigger product has at least a certain quantity in cart.

Preview and publish

Use the live preview on the right to check the pop-up styling, then click Publish to take the offer live. You can return to the Manual offers list any time to pause, edit, or delete it.
