Does my store's variant limit come into play?

When using Variant Dependent Method (V1), Custom Pricing creates hidden duplicate variants for each pricing level and tag associated with that product. These are an exact copy of the variants that already exist, but with the discounted price applied.

You can create as many pricing tiers as you need as long as you stay within Shopify's current variant limit of 2048 variants per product.

Note: Custom Pricing Standard Method (V2) and Accelerated Method (V3) do not create variants. For more information, please visit Discount Methods and How to Switch to learn how to switch.

How it works

The following example shows how your variants can increase when using Custom Pricing in Variant Dependent Method (V1).

Example

You have a T-shirt with three regular variants:

  • Small

  • Medium

  • Large

You create special pricing for two tags, silver and gold. Custom Pricing creates gold and silver versions of those variants as follows:

  • Small

  • Medium

  • Large

  • Small (silver)

  • Medium (silver)

  • Large (silver)

  • Small (gold)

  • Medium (gold)

  • Large (gold)

There are now 9 variants; 3 regular, and 6 additional ones created by Custom Pricing.

Alert: Custom Pricing V1 does not support products where variant options are linked to metafields or metaobjects. Pricing may not apply correctly to these variants. Configure your product options using manually entered variant values (for example: Size, Color, or Material) instead of linking the option to a metafield. If metafields are already linked, you can edit the product option in Shopify and disconnect the metafield. Learn more about metafields in Shopify’s documentation.
